I’m Michael Honey. I live in Launceston, Tasmania, and I want to build a better, kinder, cooler planet.

I'm interested in:

  • ecology, climate change, biodiversity

  • infrastructure, energy, urbanism, transport

  • improving our bodies and minds

I understand technology, design, politics, and people, and I want to make a positive difference in the world. I want to work with people who share that vision, who understand that it's an ongoing process of improvement and reinvention; that we can balance pragmatism with idealism; and that working on worthwhile projects with good people is one of life's enduring joys.

I started Icelab, a design and development studio based in Canberra and Melbourne. I’ve talked a lot about the four-day week. I've worked with (and for) startups of all kinds. I’m an experienced writer, thinker, speaker, designer, artist and coder who’s spent a career telling stories and explaining complex systems in interesting, useful and beautiful ways. My skills include research, communication design, storytelling, data analysis, data visualisation, collaboration, strategy, business thinking, and team building.

I have been working professionally in the design/web/interactive/data visualisation and adjacent spaces for twenty years. I am not afraid of databases or spreadsheets and enjoy data wrangling. I have created and delivered innumerable pitch decks and presentations, and I am comfortable talking in any context – in person, on stage, or online, and at any level, from the C-suite to media to regular human beings.

I’m currently consulting on environmental projects with a storytelling perspective. I’m open to engagements of all sorts, from short-term project and consulting work to part- and full-time gigs at startups or established companies.
